Winchester Cathedral visit

Our guide was Mike Cox, who has been known for a long time by Folkert van Galen as Mike’s wife is Dutch. They raised money for the Emmaus housing and recycling project in Winchester. The Catenian Circles of Winchester and Southampton contributed their president’s charity monies to the project in 2007-08. The project was built in very short time and has been flourishing ever since.

Mike showed us elements of the cathedral building that we would not have known otherwise: The two styles within the building (Roman and Gothic) the tiles on the floor, the big  windows above the entrance formed of broken glass during the 1553 Reformation, the sinking of the outside wall of the cathedral, the woodcarvings with amazing details, and the unique crypt with its Anthony Gormley statue.

A very enjoyable and informative visit!
